Every year a new car comes out that tries to claim the title of world’s fastest production car. With speeds now eclipsing 250 miles per hour these vehicles are challenging even some of the fastest cars on the tracks as well. The top five is a list of vehicles that most people probably never will drive, but can dream about.

Currently the fifth fastest car in the world is the Ferrari Enzo. While this vehicle is no longer in production, at the time it was made it was one of the fastest. Capable of achieving a high speed of around 220 mph this car has been described as one of the greatest Ferrari’s ever built. Considering the long history of Ferrari and the cars they have made this is high praise.

Fourth on the list is the MacLaren F1. This again is an older automobile, but is capable of astounding speed. With a listed top speed of 240 mph this car can blow the doors off just about anything on the road. The F1 brought many firsts to the world of the super car, including a monocoque design and unprecedented top speed. It reigned as the king of speed until the number three car came along and knocked it off. The MacLaren continues to be an impressive performer that is sought after by seekers of the ultimate driving experience with no limits on what they can spend.

At number three we have a relatively unknown and limited production car from Koenigsegg called the CCR. It held the top spot for a short period until being knocked off by the number two car. This car has a listed top speed of 242 mph, just slightly ahead of the MacLaren. It is however a little bit less expensive than the MaClaren, but still will run upwards of half a million U.S. dollars.

Number two is held by the Bugatti Veyron. When this vehicle came out it, like many other cars on this list, was the first of its kind in many areas. This car was the first production vehicle to exceed 1000 horsepower and two hundred and fifty mile per hour. The seven speed transmission powers the Veyron from 0-60 in under 3 seconds, again a first for a production car. When it came out there was nothing that came close to being its equal. This would continue for several years until the production of the number one car.

Holding down the top spot is the Shelby Ultimate Aero. At less than half the cost of the Veyron, this 1183 horsepower monster will completely destroy any other car on the road. Confirmed by Guinness, this car currently holds the top spot in the record books with an average top speed of 255.83 mph. How long it holds this title is uncertain as the next fastest production car is always right around the corner.
